Yamaha RX 100 : Excitement is buzzing in India’s motorcycle scene as Yamaha has confirmed the relaunch of the beloved RX 100 motorcycle, set for early 2025. Fans are eagerly anticipating this comeback of a legendary two-stroke bike that won the hearts of many during the 1990s.
Originally launched in 1985, the Yamaha RX 100 quickly became more than just a mode of transport; it transformed into a cultural icon for several generations. With its lightweight build, impressive acceleration, and that signature two-stroke sound—once a familiar melody on Indian roads—it cultivated a devoted following that remained strong even after production was halted.
“I remember the day my father brought home our RX 100,” recounts Rajesh Menon, a 43-year-old software engineer from Bangalore. “It was like a festival in our neighborhood! That bike symbolized freedom for us middle-class families. My son knows all about it because I’ve shared those stories with him.”
This deep-rooted connection across generations seems to play a vital role in Yamaha’s relaunch strategy. Representatives from the company acknowledge that the enthusiasm shown by original RX 100 owners, along with their children, ultimately paved the way for this revival.
Engineering Challenges for the Yamaha RX 100
One of the biggest hurdles Yamaha’s team faced was updating the RX 100’s traditional two-stroke engine to meet India’s stringent BS6 emission regulations. Yamaha’s R&D talent in Surajpur has reportedly tackled this by employing advanced direct injection technology, electronic engine management, and catalytic converters.
As Dr. Arjun Nair, a mechanical engineer from IIT Delhi, explains, “Adapting a two-stroke engine is no small feat due to inherent higher emissions. Yamaha’s hybrid approach appears to maintain the original engine’s charm while significantly cutting down environmental impact.”
Motorcycle journalists who have previewed the revamped engine report it retains the iconic throttle response and torque curve, with emissions reduced by about 85% when compared to previous models. The engine’s displacement has slightly increased to 110cc, while the power output stays close to the original 11 horsepower.
Preserving Aesthetic with Modern Enhancements
Photos released by Yamaha show a motorcycle that closely resembles the original design. Features like the teardrop fuel tank, flat seat, and minimalist dashboard have been preserved. However, modern updates like LED lighting, disc brakes, and modified ergonomics cater to today’s taller riders.
Eishin Chihana, Chairman of Yamaha Motor India, shares, “Our goal was to honor the original RX 100. Where improvements were necessary, they were made with careful consideration.”
Upgraded materials enhance the construction of the new RX 100, with high-tensile steel in the frame and lighter alloys used for wheels and swingarms. These enhancements aim to boost handling while keeping the motorcycle’s agile nature intact.
Market Positioning and Availability of Yamaha RX 100
Experts in the industry predict the relaunched RX 100 will sit in a premium segment within Yamaha’s offerings. While standard commuter motorcycles in India generally range from ₹70,000 to ₹90,000, the new RX 100 is expected to start at around ₹1.5 lakh (approximately $1,800). This price reflects its limited production and sophisticated engineering needed for modernization.
Yamaha plans to produce an initial batch of 7,500 units, gearing up for deliveries in February 2025. They have also introduced a unique allocation system that prioritizes verified original RX 100 owners, allowing loyal fans to rediscover the bike they cherished.
“This motorcycle stands for more than just transport,” says motorcycle historian Sidharth Krishnan. “It captures a pivotal moment in India’s evolution—an era when access to Japanese vehicles represented newfound mobility for the middle class. The relaunch honors this legacy while inviting a new generation to experience it.”
Pre-launch events are lined up in major Indian cities starting November 2024, where potential buyers can interact with the motorcycle and secure their reservations through authorized dealers.
